1. When I was a little-bitty girl I learned a song that my big sister liked to sing. It started like this:
Lucy, little Lucy, please tell me the news.
The geese are going barefoot because they've no shoes.
The cobbler has leather but no last to use
So he cannot make them a pair of new shoes.
My mother had to tell me what several of the words meant. She also explained, in very simple terms, how shoes are made. She also told me that real geese don't wear shoes and I was deeply disappointed. Now I know that geese do wear shoes! This photo has restored my faith in the truthfulness of songs for children.
